1.) I choose the personal story called Police Officers Need Help Too . The person who wrote this story works has been working as a police officer for over 24 years and is Combat Vertern who sereved for the U.S. Marine Corps for 8 years. This person struggles and has been diagnosed with PTSD, Major Depressive Disorder and Anxiety. He has to be able to cope with everything that he has seen on the job that most people are not exposed to. He has seen suicide scenes, officer involvded shootings and has seen his classmates been shots, child abuse, and so many teffible things that most people have neveer experienced.
At first, he felt like he did not need help and that he was could not show any "weakness" in he field of work. He stated that everythig became over whelming and that he decided that he needed to get help. He said that he began to isolate himself from his family and griend,s because he did not want anyone to think that he was "weak". In the story, he states "If I had not made that phone call, I would not be here right now writing this article. I truly believe I would have been another statistic of police suicides" so I believe that the help that he recieved has been very beneficial. He is now a Peer Support Officer and an advocate for mental health for police officers.
2.) He did not talk to much about what it was like to have the PTSD, Major Depressive Order, and Anxiey too much. He mainly spoke about how police officers should not be considered weak if they seek mental health help. The book discusses Anxiety ad Depressive Disorder in 15.4, and PTSD in section 15.6 .
3.) It made me feel upset that police officers feel like it is not okay to talk about what they go through when they see so many horrible things. I think that this is a stigma that is very dangerous for anyone willing to go into that work force. I actually have a friend who is wanting to be come a police officer and has talked to me about how they cannot see a therapist because they may be seen as unfit, even though therapy could be very beneficial for them. I could not imagine what it is like to be this person and feel like they could not get help at first, I would proably feel very low, trapped, and helpless. I feel like I could help advocate and let people know about this stigma, inform people. I don't think that it has changed my thoughts on phsycological disorders at all, I just was fresturated when I heard about the stigmas surrounding police officers and veterans.
