What is a Senior Project?
"The Senior Project is an opportunity for you to demonstrate what you know and to showcase your achievement. It must be successfully completed to graduate from AMES. A college forum adviser will guide students through the process, but most of the work will be completed outside of class. Senior Project has been highly acclaimed and proven successful in many high schools across the country. The Senior Project is a fitting conclusion to your high school education signifying a capstone event. Through the project, you are able to demonstrate accumulated skills in time-management, research, problem-solving, human interaction, organization, and public-speaking. This is appropriate as the culmination of your K-12 education because these are the very skills and abilities which you will be expected to demonstrate as college students and/or employees." -AMES Counselors

Research and Bibliography
"You must research and document information on a subject of your choice -- a subject in which you have an interest, but are not already an expert. As part of your research, you must obtain a mentor to assist in advising you throughout the project. Your mentor should be someone who is knowledgeable in your area of interest, is able to meet with you weekly, and someone who can help you strengthen your project. Your mentor could be a faculty member at AMES or someone you know in the community. Your research may be in the form of a research paper, data you have compiled such as surveys, documentation of interviews, etc. and must have a bibliography."
Final Project
"The third phase requires you to apply the information you have gained from your research to manufacture a "product." Your product may be an actual physical product, a performance, demonstration, or a service. There must be a clear relationship between your research and your product. The product will be assessed during your senior portfolio presentation."
This was the presentation that I presented to the third grade class to demonstrate my knowledge.
Demonstration of Understanding
The way that I demonstrated my understanding of my research by presenting to my kid brother's third grade class at Jim Bridger Elementary School. I made a presentation about how to take care of their teeth and why they should. I introduced myself and told them about my internship. At first, they were very quiet. When I started to get into the fun facts and the video, the were more curios. After the video, I asked them questions. When they got it right, I would give them some candy. They started to ask really funny questions about animal teeth and things that a dentist would be able to answer. I noticed that they did learn a lot and that is what I wanted. At the end, I handed out goodie bags that my mentor and I put together full of toothbrushes, floss, and toothpaste for the children after the presentation.
The reason that I chose this age group is that they can learn while they were young. It seems like there are less oral problems is adults and children understand why it is important to take care of their teeth. I am so grateful that I was able to do this project and get the opportunity to talk about something that I love.
